Family Businesses 2038 - The Future Panel

The world is changing faster than ever –economically, technologically and socially. With increasing digitalization, urbanization, individualization and capital market orientation, the way we live and work together is changing. Family business owners are particularly affected by these changes and are faced with fundamental questions: How far do I have to open up my business to avoid losing contact with my customers? How much expertise do I need to surrender, how much cooperation is necessary? Will digitalization lead to a renaissance of life away from conurbations or will the lack of skilled workers force me to relocate? Can the dominance of the family in the business be maintained in the medium term or are new forms of participation necessary? The Future Panel will address these questions and ask: What role will family businesses (still) play 20 years from now?

The Business Owner Talk: "The company must serve the people.“

Deeply personal confessions in direct discussions between business owners have been among the highlights of the Business Owner Success Forum for years. This year, publisher Dr. Sven Murmann will be talking to the “Family Business Owner of the Year 2012”, Heinrich Deichmann, about the family business owner’s social responsibility. Yesterday. Today. Tomorrow.

Heinrich Deichmann is Chairman of the Board of Administration and Managing Directors of Deichmann SE and Europe’s largest shoe retailer in its third generation.
Like his grandfather and father, the “Family Business Owner of the Year 2012” is guided in his business decisions not only by economic rationality but also
by his Christian convictions. „I believe that a business that takes the human aspect seriously is more successful in the long term than a business that does not,“ he says.

The publisher Dr. Sven Murmann comes from the wellknown Schleswig-Holstein entrepreneurial family Murmann and has built up a successful business of his own in media company Murmann Publishers. As a Doctor of Philosophy, Murmann loves intellectual provocation. In a discussion with Heinrich Deichmann, he will therefore also ask the question: “Doesn’t a capitalist economic and social order place systemically insurmountable hurdles in the path of Mr. Deichmann’s goals?”

01 -Family Equity not Private Equity – Business owners finance business owners

How do I find an investor who ticks like me, who suits me and my company, with whom I can go through thick and thin in the long term? In addition to well-known institutional investors, family equity is an interesting alternative for many private companies. What changes, however, if I include another family of entrepreneurs as a majority or minority investor, how can a structure look if it is to last for a long time? In this workshop, two entrepreneurs report on their experiences with family equity, provide food for thought and will also discuss any questions you might have.

03 - Growing, Buying or Restructuring the Business Model?
How successors can further develop the family business

In addition to the much-discussed personal challenges in the context of succession, strategic and operational challenges are currently gaining in importance. Digitization, new technological opportunities, and outright strategy and business model changes do not only present opportunities for a company and its successor - they also give rise to specificcrisks. How can New Leaders succeed in leading already successful companies to further profitable growth without risking everything? Hans-Jörg Hisam will report on how he has transformed a regional company into a nationwide operating armoured transportation and security service. Goetz Hertz-Eichenrode describes why he considers a new business field to be sensible, and Thomas Hoyer poses the question of how a family-owned company can use the challenges of changing markets and framework conditions as an opportunity for advanced development.

04 -Family Business X - How the next moonshot develops
Start-ups, incubators, accelerators,company building

Moonshot, the term refers to the famous announcement by John F. Kennedy  at the beginning of the  1960s , to shoot a human to the moon by the end of the decade. For companies in the digital age, it means searching for "The Next Big Thing". It is the search for the unknown, where X stands for the unknown. Family business X is the search for digital innovation that leads to new services or business models so that family businesses can continue to be successful in the digital age. But how does innovation happen today? How is something new invented? Working with startups, building incubators and accelerators, or even starting a new company? Three family entrepreneurs tell about their experiences and fromulas for success. What has proven itself, what should be dropped. We want to learn from each other.

Finance Function of the Future - The way to a  new command center for owners

In order to anticipate market changes and react quickly to them, owners are increasingly dependent on decision-relevant information for their finance function. The provision of this information comes off if the finance function makes a value-adding contribution through the use of new technologies and thus becomes a real sparring partner for the holder. But how exactly does the finance function of the future have to be in order to optimally exploit the opportunities offered by digitization? The use of which which technology makes sense, and where? What are the value-adding core functions of a finance function in the future? Gori von Hirschhausen will give you answers to these questions in his workshop.
